Quinceanera Traditions

Are you preparing for your upcoming quinceanera and wondering what are the most important traditions? We wrote this article for you.

The Court

A quince court, also known as the Court of Honor, is composed of family and friends of the quinceanera who share in her special day. Traditionally, the court consists of 14 damas, 14 chambelanes, and 1 chambelan de honor, but it is now acceptable to customize the court to fit your needs.

The Mass

The first part of a traditional quinceañera is a religious ceremony. During the mass, the quinceañera will recite readings and receive gifts with special meaning, such as a pillow, cross, rosary, Bible, or tiara. The quince court and immediate family sit in the front pews.

The Reception

Following the church is the actual reception. The party could take place at any kind of venue, from a private home to a grand ballroom, a party in a tent, banquet hall, to even a destination quinceanera. The reception will involve a combination of dinner and dancing.

The Dress

The quinceañera ball gown is an iconic tradition. Strapless dresses used to be the norm, but now there are more options like sleeves, sequins, and multiple layers. However, these dresses can be expensive.

The Ramo (Bouquet)

It is a tradition for the quinceanera to carry a ramo, or bouquet. It can be artificial, real, or even made of surprise elements, like paper flowers.

The Waltz

There are two formal dances: the father and daughter and the quinceanera and her court dance. The latter is usually choreographed by a professional and takes place after the meal. After the Waltz a lot of the pressure is off and now partygoers can enjoy the party.

Padrinos and Madrinas

Padrinos and Madrinas are sponsors of a quinceanera and play a special role in the event. They sponsor specific items like the ramo, tiara, cake, limo, and venue rental. Family members, friends, and church members can serve as padrinos.

The Doll

The last doll is a symbol of the quinceanera leaving childhood and becoming a young lady. It is often dressed in a matching dress to the quinceanera's outfit and can be kept as a keepsake. Alternatively, a plush bear may be gifted instead of a doll.

The Shoes

The changing of the shoes is performed at the reception, and it involves the quinceanera removing her flat shoes. Her father, or other important male figure in her life, will replace the flats with heels. A very popular and emotive quinceanera tradition.

Recuerdos

Are favors for your guests to take with them at the end of the quinceanera. Favors range from candles, candies, jewelry, or religious items. You may also give special gifts to your padrinos and madrinas, and especially to your padrinos de honor.
